Indian television industry has come through a long age. It started from the time when Doordarshan was the only channel that aired on television and people used to wait for Sundays for watching shows. It was like a grand event happening, people sitting in front of their television sets, even watching the advertisements with same excitement.

Owning a television was a luxury back then but it’s an obvious thing now. Changes have also been occurring in the pattern and genres of Hindi serials. From providing knowledge based and clean entertainment content, the focus has shifted to more of an audience based content. The ethics seem to be faded now but these collection are of all time best hindi TV shows.

But there are still some of our favorite shows since the time that we love to watch even today.

Malgudi Days

Based on the works of R.K. Narayan, the series was made in 1986. 39 episodes telecasted on Doordarshan.

Ramayan (1986)

Created, written and directed by Ramanand Sagar, it aired during 1987-1988. This was an adaptation of ancient epic Valmiki Ramayan and Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas. It holds the record of being world’s most viewed mythological serial in Limca Book of World Records. Despite poor production quality, the show was loved by masses.

Mahabharat (1988)

It is based on the Hindu epic Mahabharata. It was a 94 episode series. Various versions have been produced after this but the presentation and characters from this are still unforgettable. The special feature was time narrated the whole series at the beginning or end of the show. It was produced by B.R. Chopra and directed by Ravi Chopra.

Tu Tu Mai Mai

A hilarious comedy between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. It first aired on Doordarshan in 1994 and later on Star Plus. It was directed by Sachin Pilgaonkar.

Antakshari

Antakshari was a music reality show. It was formerly called Sansui Antakshari hosted by Annu Kapoor and Pallavi Joshi from 1994-2005.

Hum Paanch

An Indian sitcom, a story of a middle class man who always finds himself in trouble because of his 5 daughters. It first aired on 1995-1999, second season 2005-mid 2006.

Aahat

A thriller/horror anthology series. The story focused on all paranormal activities. You are sure to get goose bumps here. It first aired in 1995. There were 6 seasons on Sony Entertainment.

Shaktimaan

Shaktimaan is a fictional Indian superhero who lives a dual life, one of a common man and another of a superhero. Against all the odds, he has to save the world. From September 1997 to March 2005, every kid of that age and this age is a complete fan of the hero.

Office Office

It premiered on SAB TV on September 3, 2001. Pankaj Kapoor played the role of a common man Musaddilal. The man has to face the corruption in public offices.

Sarabhai vs Sarabhai

An anthology sitcom featuring an upper class modern Gujarati family of Mumbai. It went on air in 2005. An elite mother-in-law has daily issues with her middle class daughter-in-law. It has huge popularity even today. We can watch the episodes a thousand times.

CID

It’s a crime fictional show. The longest running television show in India completed successful 19 years and is in no position to shut down for the next 19 years as well. ACP Pradyuman and Daya are the soul of the show.

Khichdi

One of the finest examples of sitcoms. It was one of the beginner shows to adopt the western pattern of running in seasons. The story is of a Gujarati joint family who all are a bunch of funny people. Hansa and Praful are the known faces of the serial.

Balika Vadhu

Balika Vadhu is first Indian show to complete 2000 episodes. The story is set in rural Rajasthan that traces the journey of a child bride from childhood to womanhood. It first aired in 2008 on Colors TV.

Kaun Banega Crorepati

Amitabh Bachchan is the only one behind its success. It was a game show containing 15 questions. Sushil Kumar was the first person to win the highest amount, Rs. 5 crore.

Taarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashma

Running since 2008, the show has a huge popularity amongst all age groups in every household. It holds a record for the longest running comedy show in the Limca Book of World Records. Daya ben and Jethalal are the show stoppers. It is based on the Duniya Ne Oondha Chashmah column by Taarak Mehta for the Gujarati magazine Chitralekha.

 Comedy Nights with Kapil

I don’t need to tell you anything about this. A comedy celebrity talk show hosted by Kapil Sharma. It started with Colors TV for 3 years but then shifted to Sony as The Kapil Sharma Show due to some differences.
