All About Radhika Apte
The very well known face today, Radhika Apte is a film and theatre actress born in Pune. Beginning her acting career from theatre with the Aasakta group in Pune, Radhika ventured into films much later. Her film debut began with a supporting role in Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi in 2005 alongside Shahid Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt.
In the Bengali cinema, Apte made her debut presence with Antaheen in 2009. The same year, she also gave her Marathi debut with Samaantar. Radhika was not a recognized face till this time in Bollywood.
Years later came her major breakthroughs in 2015 – ‘Badlapur’ with Varun Dhawan, ‘Hunterrr’ and ‘Manjhi – The Mountain Man’ with Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Radhika received vast appreciation for the 2016 psychological thriller ‘Phobia’.
Crediting to this success, Radhika Apte did two other commercially successful films- Lai Bhaari (Marathi, 2014) and Kabali (Tamil, 2016).
Apte’s recent release Parched was highly acclaimed worldwide. The film did not do well in the Indian theatres but Apte’s acting was highly praised. The film received awards and nominations from film festivals across the globe.
Born on September 7, 1985 in Pune, Radhika Apte is the daughter of Dr. Charudutt Apte, a leading neurosurgeon and chairman of Sahyadri Hospital in Pune. Apte graduated from Fergusson College, Pune in Economics and Mathematics. Radhika is also trained in Kathak for 8 years under the expert Rohini Bhate. Having completed four films, Radhika moved to London for a year for studying contemporary dance at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
Radhika has been a part of several stage plays especially in the Marathi segment. Her association with Aasakta Kalamanch theatre group of Mohit Takalkar made her a part of popular plays like Tu, Matra Ratra, Purnaviram, and Samuel Beckett’s That Time With Rehan Engineer. The commercial Hindi play Kanyadaan and Bombay Black (English) were also very well performed by Radhika. Apte likes to work for experimental theatres and one such was a Marathi play Uney Purey Shahar Ek, an adaptation of Girish Karnad’s Benda Kallu on Toast.
Radhika Apte has acted in various short films like Darmiyan, Vakratund Swaha which by filmed in 12 years by Ashish Avikunthak. The highly appreciated Anurag Kashyap’s That Day After Everyday based on eve teasing which released in 2012 on YouTube. Radhika also played Ahalya in Sujoy Ghosh’s Bengali short film titled same ‘Ahalya’.
Radhika made her first Bollywood debut while she studied in college in Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi in 2005. Her Bengali debut Antaheen was a recommendation of actor Rahul Bose when he saw Radhika in the play Bombay Black. In 2015, Radhika appeared in Marathi film Gho Mala Asla Hava, then Hindi docufiction Mor Dekhne Jungle Mein, Ek Marathi Manoos, Life Online, Samaantar, Waiting Room and Ram Gopal Varma’s Rakta Charitra and its sequel.
From the year 2011, Radhika started doing some of the major roles and goof films with prominent names. Anthology film I Am and Ekta Kapoor’s Shor in the City, Ha Bharat Majha (2012) inspired by Anna Hazre’s Movement, Tukaram (Marathi) and Dhoni (Tamil).
This moved forward to Radhika’s feature in Bengali film Rupkatha Noy (2013) followed by Postcard, Pendulum, Legend, Vetri Selvan and Lai Bhaari in 2014. Legend and Lai Bhaari broke all records and became the highest grossing Marathi films of all time.
2015 marked Radhika Apte’s roles in 6 feature films releasing in the first 8 months of the year. Starting with Badlapur (Hindi), Haram (her first Malayalam), lion (Telugu), Hunterrr (Hindi), the widely acclaimed Manjhi – The Mountain Man based on Dashrath Manjhi’s life and Kaun Kitne Paani Mein.
Radhika’s next release was the Tamil film Kabali in 2016. The film was a gangster drama. Radhika played the role of wife of Rajnikanth. Radhika for again appreciated for her performance and the film was a commercial success.
Radhika Apte did another film Parched in 2015 but it released in India in 2016. The film received worldwide recognition. Parched had already released in 7 countries and it ran in France for more than 22 weeks. It has won 18 awards and received huge response in film festivals across the continents. It also premiered in 2015 Toronto International Film Festival in the Special Presentation section.

Radhika’s upcoming films include The Field Rohit Karn Batra’s feature debut, Bombairiya (an Indo-British production) and Ula (Tamil).
Radhika married British musician Benedict Taylor in September 2012. She met Benedict in 2011 in London while studying for the dance course. They had been living together for a long time. They registered their marriage in September 2012 and the official ceremony was held in March 2013.
